Expat Bangladesh

For those looking for a different way of life, Bangladesh definitely delivers. While Bangladesh might not offer the glitz and glamour of other countries, for those looking for grounded, friendly people and making a difference, Bangladesh might be the perfect location to live short or long term as an expat.

Bangladesh is not for the materialistic, on the whole it is a poor country, however for those that are looking for interaction, culture and community, Bangladesh definitely will fill your soul.

Climate

The climate in Bangladesh is far different than most westerners are accustomed to. Bangladesh is known for its tropical monsoon climate. This means that part of the year it is very sunny and dry and the other part of the year is extremely wet, with terrible rains. The dry season lasts from November to February, with January being the coolest month of the year with temperatures ranging from the 60's to 70's, with cool nights in the high 50's. During the hottest parts of the year, the temperature can rise to around 100 degrees. The rainy season lasts from June to September and Bangladesh can experience about 60 inches of rain each year in many parts of the country.

During the rainy season, expect to get wet, while umbrellas and a light raincoat will prevent you from getting soaked in the states, in Bangladesh, there isn't a whole lot you can do when you experience a torrential downpour. One way to minimize the wetness is to wear fabrics such as cotton that dry quick. During the coolest winter months, a light sweater is recommended at night.

Government

Bangladesh is officially called the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The state of India borders Bangladesh to the north, east and west and Burma (now called Myanmar) is to the south.

Bangladesh has a parliamentary representative democrat framework. The country of Bangladesh has been independent since 1971. While it is not very difficult to visit Bangladesh, in certain circumstances you might find plenty of obstacles to staying their long term. Usually the government requires a visa, passport and a fee to enter the country; however rules do change quite often so check with the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington D.C.. You can also find information at the following US Department of State Foreign Entry Requirements page.

It should be noted that Bangladesh is one of the largest Islamic countries in the world. Most Bangladeshi's pursue the Sunni sect of Islam, but it should be known that the people are very friendly and very accommodating.

Tax System

Regarding the tax system, most expats do not usually choose Bangladesh to start a business due to the fact that the government is not as open as other markets. Tariffs are extremely high and the government is very protective of many industries and monetary lending. As far as taxation goes, Bangladesh scores moderately high with income tax ranging to 25%. Corporate taxes are high as well, hovering near 30%. Besides these high taxes and tariffs, there is also VAT tax, property tax and interest tax.

If you are planning on filing in the US as someone living abroad, you can locate information on the IRS's International Taxpayer page.

For more information regarding tax rules, it is best to contact the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington D.C.

Medical Care

Obviously in poorer countries such as Bangladesh, health care facilities will not be up to par with Western standards. Before you arrive in Bangladesh, make sure you receive a through examination. If you have any serious or moderate health problems, you may want to delay your trip. Make sure to contact the Bangladesh embassy to find out all the essential documents and vaccinations you must take before entering. You can find out health information as well at Virtual Bangladesh: Visitor's Health Requirements.

The water in Bangladesh is usually not potable, which means that before you brush, make ice or consume any water, make sure you boil it or that it is bottled.

Real Estate

Most expats do not come to Bangladesh to invest in property and unfortunately property rights are not that established or transparent. Purchasing property for investment purposes is not advised. If you are planning on living in Bangladesh, perhaps the best to enjoy your stay is via an apartment, dorm or staying with friends. In the main cities there are plenty of apartments available, however don't expect most of the amenities that you are accustomed to here in the states. In a few select places, there are modern apartment buildings being built or offered for rent. These apartments are usually more affordable than in the states, but much more expensive than traditional housing here in Bangladesh.

Shopping

One of the joys of Bangladesh is the wonderful people and their culture. Many expats find plenty of wonderful crafts and goods at the many local markets. While there are Western style shopping available, for those that come to Bangladesh to live long term, the interest lies with the people and not necessarily material goods.

Cost of Living

Most people can enjoy Bangladesh because the cost of living is extremely low, however keep in mind the infrastructure is not as modern or in as good shape as the West. While apartments are extremely affordable, along with food and basic items, Western products could be more expensive in some cases than the United States, due to the cost of importing goods and tariffs.
