I am moving to the Bahamas (Nassau) later in the year and have tried to research buying a car. Are there any car dealers on the island? Also, how practical/costly would it be to purchase a car in the UK and ship it out?

Are you kidding. It starts in June and ends in mid-November; that’s almost 6 months! And they have major destruction from these hurricanes. Aruba is a terrific island not in the hurricane zone.

I webmaster in eCommerce and have considered living as an expat.
A plan I am considering is to live on one of the out islands such as Eleuthera and run my business from there. I have supply sources who will ship from their warehouses as my site(s) generate sales.

I’d like to find an affordable cottage which would not have to be near the beach. I would be working most of the time in my SOHO (small office home office) business. I may also consider building a small place too.

What can you tell me about doing this on the island of Eleuthera.
I may even operate a small aircraft in time to travel from Florida
to the proposed destination. Is there a listing of facilities for groceries, supplies, high speed internet, for the out islands you could mention where I could research in greater depth ? What would you consider if you were in my place ?

Living on the less trendy islands can be less expensive, if you choose an island where it’s easy to find the basics (food, water, electricity, communications, transportation).

One of my favorites is Great Guana Cay. The island features a couple of grocery stores, plentiful restaurants, and a daily ferry to and from Marsh Harbor.

Would the cost of living be cheaper on one of the less popular islands and just taxi over to the more popular islands when the need arises?

Gaining professional employment in the Bahamas can be very tricky, as the government tries to reserve all desirable jobs for native Bahamanians. If a company wishes to hire an expat, they must obtain government permission. This process can go smoothly if the bureaucrat is in the right mood or it can be made very difficult for the employer to prove that no native Bahamian possesses the skills required for the job.

The Bahamas used to be a great place to retire, but with improved communications and the growing number of jobs that can now be done online, there are now quite a lot of people who live in the Bahamas and work on the Internet. It’s the best of both worlds.

I don’t know of a comprehensive resource for that data. I think that I would start off by mapping the major hospitals and deciding how far away from one I felt comfortable living.
